50 KILLED TODAY IN DEADLIEST SHOOTING EVER IN US HISTORY SINCE 2007

50 people killed in a mass shooting outside a gay night club in Orlando, Florida. The gunman was identified to be an
American born Afgan, Omar Mateen.

The shooting in Orlando at Pulse, which bills itself as "the hottest gay bar" in the city and was packed with more than 300 people for "Latin Night," was reported minutes after 2 a.m. Sunday. In addition to those killed inside the club, at least 53 people were taken to area hospitals. Dozens of partygoers remained hostages in the club for several hours after the initial shooting, prompting SWAT teams to rush inside. Shortly after 6 a.m. local time, Orlando police tweeted that the gunman had been killed.

A state of emergency has declared in the city by the Mayor.

Law enforcement sources told CNN that the suspect had possible explosive devices strapped to his body and in his vehicle, but a U.S. official said later that no explosives were found.

House Intelligence Committee member Rep. Adam Schiff said on CNN that local police in Orlando told him that Mateen "made a pledge of allegiance to ISIL" and "was heard praying in a foreign language" at some point.

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., said he was told by Intelligence Committee staff members that there was some connection to ISIS, but nothing could be immediately confirmed.

Before Sunday, the deadliest shootings in U.S. history were at Virginia Tech in 2007 and Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, with 32 and 27 killed. This apparently makes it the Deadliest shootings in US history.

At least nine officers were involved in the shootout, Mina said. Several coroner vans were seen traveling toward the nightclub.

One officer suffered an eye injury when a bullet struck his Kevlar helmet, said Danny Banks, special agent in charge of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Orlando bureau. The helmet saved the officer's life, Banks said.
